4 Reasons why you should use eco-friendly cleaning products.

In today’s world, you might notice people around you becoming conscious of their choices’ impact on the environment. Well, I’m one of them, and having a kid made me even more conscious of it. This shift towards sustainability is not just limited to food and lifestyle choices but can also extend to how we clean our homes. Today, I want to discuss switching to sustainable and eco-friendly cleaning products.

This is a significant step we can all take to reduce our carbon footprint and promote a healthier environment. In this post, we’ll explore the benefits of using eco-friendly cleaning products and highlight some top choices you can incorporate into your cleaning routine. Finally, I hope to remove some stigmas around it because a more eco-friendly home doesn’t always mean more expensive or less efficient products.

Why Choose Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products?

1. A Healthier Home Environment

Traditional cleaning products often contain harsh chemicals that can cause respiratory issues, skin irritation, and other health problems. Eco-friendly products use natural ingredients that are safer for you and your family.

On a personal note, I want to know that my home is not becoming a potential hazard to my loved ones. You may buy eco-friendly products that some may argue are more expensive, which I would have to agree with. With that said, there are DYI cleaning products you can make yourself that will most likely be more budget-friendly. Often, you already have the ingredients at home. I’ll make sure to post DYI recipes soon. At the end of the day, do what makes sense to you, but remember that you may save money by caring about what goes into your home.

2. A Better World For Our Children

Conventional cleaners can contribute to water pollution and harm aquatic life when they are washed down the drain. Eco-friendly products are biodegradable and less harmful to the environment.

I’ve seen too many places littered with plastic bottles to turn a blind eye to it. One day, I thought, “Am I contributing to this?” and the answer was “yes”. So, I started thinking of ways that I could take to change that. Some steps are easy to take like using products that can easily be refilled instead of buying a new container. I still use a few products with plastic containers but I will say that I use probably 70% less than I used to. I do want to altogether remove plastic from my house. That’s the goal.

3. Sustainable Ingredients

Eco-friendly cleaning products are made with renewable resources, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and minimizing the depletion of natural resources. As I mentioned before, we can make our own cleaning products. We will need ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, castile soap, lemon, and water, to name a few. You may also use essential oils to make your home smell good.

The examples in this post come from my own experience, and it may work for some and not for others. I will share a few recipes in my next posts, but here is one that I found easy to use:

Here’s a simple DIY all-purpose cleaner recipe for cleaning surfaces:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water (Distilled water or boiled)
  • Juice of 1 lemon (adds natural antibacterial properties and a fresh scent)
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil (optional, for fragrance; orange or tea tree oil works well. I like to use seasonal fragrances in Fall or Christmas. It adds to the spirit. Some people also use rosemary sprigs or citrus peels. I have not used it, but it is definitely something I will try.)

Instructions:

  1. Mix the water and white vinegar in a spray bottle.
  2. Add the lemon juice.
  3. If desired, add essential oil for a pleasant scent.
  4. Shake gently to combine.

Usage:
Spray the mixture on surfaces and wipe with a clean cloth. This cleaner works well for countertops, tables, and other non-porous surfaces.

4. Reduced Waste

Many eco-friendly brands offer recyclable, biodegradable, or even reusable packaging, helping to reduce plastic waste.

For example, I recently switched to brands like Grove Collaborative for multi-surface products, Blueland for dishwasher tabs, and many others, which truly helped me make the switch because it’s easier. They usually have a tin or glass bottle for the cleaning products, and the refills come in recyclable paper or glass bottles.

Another example is that I’ve been using wool balls instead of dryer sheets or Swedish cloths instead of paper towels. These examples are great ways to reduce waste and its environmental impact.

In conclusion, switching to eco-friendly cleaning products is a thoughtful step towards a healthier lifestyle and a more sustainable world. As mentioned before, these examples are my own and may work for some and not for others. I’d love to hear about what works for you.

By choosing products made from natural ingredients, we can protect our families from harmful chemicals, reduce pollution, and minimize waste. Small changes like these, whether using store-bought or DIY options, can significantly impact our well-being and the planet. Let’s make choices that not only benefit our homes but also contribute to a better, more sustainable world.
